After several weeks of waiting for our clay birdbaths to be completed they have finally returned form the kiln at Fleming. Students made their birds sitting on a pinch pot birdbath and then it was sent to off to the kiln for the first bisque fire. Upon their return we learned about glazing and how some glazes are like fireworks when they go into the hot kiln the colors burst out and look very different from how they appear in the jars. This is a difficult concept for young students. The last journey into the kiln was for the glaze firing. The most exciting part was putting a blue glass gem into the birdbath so it would melt and give the appearance of water.
