Pumpkins At Midnight is a lesson that promotes many skills for our youngest artists. The big ideas are learning about color mixing and value (shadow and light). Students began by observing a really big pumpkin and noticing all of the details and we all looked at the pumpkin in the dark with a flash light taking the place of the moon and noticing the shadows. The next big idea was how to use the primary colors to create our pumpkin and leaf colors and there was a lot of experimenting and aha moments when students created colors. The next step int the process was after the painting dried was to use our cutting skills to get ready for place on our night sky paper. Students then added a moon and determined where the highlights and shadows would be based on the location of their moon. These concepts connect to their science standards as well.
